Police ID body found in Maumee River

TOLEDO, Ohio -

Toledo Police Department PIO Sgt. Joe Heffernan confirms investigators identified a body found in the Maumee River Wednesday night as that of Robert Brennan, 59, of Findlay.  Crews from the Toledo Fire Department pulled the body from the river in downtown Toledo. 

According to police, the body had no apparent signs of trauma.  Officers said Brennan's death was likely an accidental drowning.  However, the official cause of death remains under investigation.  An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

An employee at the Grand Plaza Hotel spotted the body floating in the Maumee River just after 8 p.m. and called 9-1-1.  Rescue crews put a boat in the water and pulled the dead man out near the Martin Luther King Bridge.

The coroner was on scene for two hours before moving the body. Police say It does not appear the man was in the water long.

"It could be an accident, could've slipped in the water," says Toledo Police Sergeant Bill Wauford. "At this point, we're not really sure what happened. He was fully dressed in nice clothes."
