TOLEDO, Ohio -

Longfellow students have a new school building this year. The elementary school completes the Start High School campus. We were invited to take a tour of the new school building for a story you'll only see on 13abc.

The new Longfellow Elementary school is more than 70,000, and it's the last piece of the puzzle to the Start High School campus.

"We're excited to share that space with them, to give our boys and girls the opportunity to use the Y, to share all of the facilities between the Y and Start community," says Longfellow Principal Yolanda Johnson.

The new state-of-the-art building cost the district $10.5 million to build. The classrooms have the latest smart boards and technology. Skylights add warmth and sunlight to the classrooms on the second floor.

The Longfellow Tigers also have a spacious gymnasium with its logo on the basketball court, a roomy cafeteria, and kindergartners have their own playground to play in.

The school has a lot of bells and whistles, but some of the rich history of the old building can still be found.

"When we thought about items we didn't want to leave behind, everybody wanted to bring the fireplace," says Johnson. "The fireplace was in the original library, so the architects came and pulled it out, and it's now in our new library. We also have another interesting piece. We have a Rembrandt rendition called ‘The Student' and it's in our foyer, and the whole community can enjoy it because we brought that as well."

School leaders hope the brand new school building will create excitement in the students and spark their minds for years to come.

The public is invited to see Longfellow Elementary at an open house September 11 at 6pm.
