Suspicious fire destroys duplex

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Toledo firefighters spent hours battling a house fire that could be seen from miles away early Saturday morning.  Crews got to the house fire in the 700th block of Stickney Avenue just before 5:30 a.m.

Chief Christine Davis of the Toledo Fire Department said, "The fire had been set, the fire was well involved when we got here.  The crews went in and attempted to put it out. Had the fire over their heads in the attic of the building at that point, I felt that it was unsafe to continue operations and I pulled them out."

She says extinguishing the fire was challenging because of the way the home was built.
She says thankfully no one was home at the time, but someone had just purchased the residence.

Neighbor Tina Peterson said, "Different neighbors are saying that they've been talking to the man that had bought it and that he was trying to convert it from a side by side duplex into a single home for senior people. They've been putting a lot of money into it. It's a shame to see it going up in smoke."

Chief Davis ruled the fire suspicious early on

"Crews smelled gasoline in the house, both doors were open which means somebody had easy access to the house."

Neighbor Tina Peterson is not surprised. "with all the people setting vacant houses on fire around here, I wouldn't doubt it."

After firefighters spent More than two hours trying to put the fire out, the roof started to collapse. Chief Davis says the house had to be torn down.

The fire is being investigated as an arson.
