BEREA, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio Turnpike says it
has solved an estimated $50,000-a-year scam involving truck drivers
ducking part of their tolls.
Truckers were gaming automated fare machines to save up to $40 a trip across the 241-mile toll road.
Turnpike officials told The
Plain Dealer newspaper in Cleveland (bit.ly/Pmm0S6) that the turnpike
updated the toll-collecting system in July to deter the scam.
Under the scam, truckers
claimed a toll card was lost, paid the full cross-state toll and used
that card to later claim a short turnpike ride. Toll cards don't specify
east or west travel.
Now a trucker must pay the
full cross-state toll if his rig entered the turnpike many hours
earlier. The actual time limit wasn't disclosed for security reasons.
