Ohioans won't see school report cards for now

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio has delayed issuing annual school report cards whose results affect dozens of decisions about money, building and program placements, and student scholarships.

The vote Monday by the state Board of Education comes amid an attendance-tampering investigation by Ohio Auditor Dave Yost. Yost launched the statewide probe after irregular enrollment and attendance practices were discovered in Columbus, Toledo and suburban Cincinnati districts.

He's investigating whether low-performing students were improperly removed from rolls to improve school performance rankings.

Acting Ohio Superintendent Michael Sawyers said the U.S. Department of Education has signed off on the delay until September. Officials want to assure report card data is accurate.

The reports give parents a snapshot of a school's performance. They also help determine which students qualify for vouchers and whether charter schools are re-certified.

The Toledo mayor's race may be a crowded affair but so far no viable Republicans. All seven announced candidates have to first file petitions and be certified by the Lucas County Board of Elections.
Toledo Mayor Mike Bell has the financial backing of Republicans and the Independent could get the party's endorsement.

We often report stories on the Ohio State Highway Patrol's K-9 unit. The dogs help Troopers find huge quantities of illegal drugs in our region every year. But between the big hits is a lot of hard work,
