TOLEDO, Ohio -

The fate of an assistant principal at Toledo Public Schools now rests in the hands of a state-appointed referee. The school board made the decision Tuesday night regarding Sandra Meeks Speller.

The Spring Elementary assistant principal has worked for the district for 16 years. She was placed on paid suspension earlier this month.

Several people testified to the board that she grabbed a student's arm and twisted it, put a student in a headlock, pushed a student up against a wall, and grabbed a student by the neck.

"There will be a hearing before a referee, and then the referee will make a recommendation to the board," says TPS School Board President Lisa Sobecki. "It will still come back for the board to make a vote."

"This does give her an excellent fighting chance," says Speller's sister, Janice Hughes. "A lot of the witnesses and the people she wanted to talk on her behalf that could shed light on these allegations will be able to speak on her behalf."

We're told Speller's suspension will remain in place until a decision is made.

There is no word yet on when a hearing will be held and whether the district will have to pay for it. The treasurer says it could cost between $8,000 and $15,000.
