Lake HS celebrates coming home with music video

Posted: Updated:

Lake High School students kicked off the new school year on Tuesday in their brand new school by shooting a nearly nine-minute music video called a "lip dub."

This comes two years after a tornado destroyed the old Lake High School.

"It was crazy, it was insane, but I'm glad we got it done," says Ashley Landers Duquette, a senior at Lake High School. "It's cool to show everybody what our school looks like, this is where we are now, we're home."

Dozens of students lip sang several songs while weaving through hallways and in-and-out of classrooms in the $25.5 million state-of-the-art building.

It's a big difference from the cramped, temporary location at Owens Community College the school used since a tornado destroyed the old high school two years ago.

"Coming here was really different because we've been in such a compacted school for the last few years," says Rebecca Boos, a senior at Lake High School.  "This is really different than what I expected. It's a lot better."

"It was tight, but it was better than not being together," says Duquette. "I'm glad we got to be together and now we have this new school and it's beautiful and I'm so excited."

The idea for the carefully crafted music video actually came from two teachers.

"I don't think we'll ever forget the past, it's always going to be a part of us, but it has definitely a fresh start," says Terry Tansel, a computer teacher. "I think the biggest thing is we our kids to love this place as much as we do as teachers and to get them involved in a way that it's their own project is the best way to do it."

"We felt like starting this school year, this day with us all coming home that it would be a great opportunity for us to showcase the building, showcase the Flyer family and all the fun things that happen here," says Jeffrey Lake, a French teacher.

After making the way through the office where you see the principal squaring off with a student, the video ends in the gymnasium where all 1,700 students in the district cheered in celebration of the fact that they're finally home.
