Advocates want to end human trafficking

Posted: Updated:

Human trafficking is a very real problem in Ohio, especially in Toledo. In June, the Safe Harbor Act became law. On Tuesday, advocates hit the streets to raise awareness.

It's something that's taking place all over the state. Groups are coming together, handing out posters to businesses to try and end child sex trafficking. They call it the first step in the campaign to stop human trafficking.

"It happens everywhere," says State Rep. Teresa Fedor. "What we're doing here is really putting this all out in the open."

Rep. Fedor and members of The Exchange Club in Toledo hit local businesses to raise awareness Tuesday. The group walked through west Toledo and dropped off posters and pamphlets to area businesses.

They want to teach the public how to identify the signs and give them the resources to call for help.

"This is a problem," says Exchange Club President Ted Lindley. "We won't stand for it, and now victims of human trafficking have an opportunity to get out of trafficking."

"I'm very encouraged that we've been able to put a strong law together," says Rep. Fedor. "I think one of the strongest laws in the nation."

Fedor spearheaded the Safe Harbor Act. It essentially protects children, keeping victims of trafficking out of jail, and instead get them the help they need.

It will also require posters with a hotline number be posted in places where authorities know victims travel.

Fedor hopes the new law will save even more kids. She says, with the public's help, it's possible.

"We want to be the first city to clean it up and to show how we're going to clean it up and be a real community in responding to eradicating this horrific crime," she says.

This was just the beginning of the campaign. Fedor says they will continue to work hard to educate people about the problem.
