Toledo firefighter burned at Omnisource blaze

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) -- One Toledo firefighter is in the hospital with what appear to be minor injuries after he was burned during at 2-alarm blaze at Omnisource Non Ferrous Division.

The fire started in the back of the scrap metal recycling company on Hill Ave, east of Westwood, around 5:45 a.m. Thursday.

Lieutenant Matthew Hertzfeld tells 13abc the fire originated in a metal mixing machine.

Fire crews were able to quickly contain the flames. Hertzfeld said it appears the fire spread toward the ceiling of the warehouse-style structure, causing flaming debris which led to the injury.

Toledo police blocked both directions of Hill Ave. for one hour while crews continued to ventilate the building and search for hot spots within the insulation.

Hertzfeld credits the quick actions of the third shift at Omnisource for keeping the damage to a minimum by immediately sounding the fire alarm.
