MONROE, Mich (WTVG) -- The ROTC program at the Monroe Jefferson school district *was* on the chopping block, but members can now say cancellation is not an option. The board voted to keep the funding in place for the 2012-13 school year.
In June, the district cut a handful of programs to help fill a $3M hole. One of those programs was the Navy Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps., or NJROTC. It's been a part of Jefferson the past 17 years.
The cadets and their parents collected more than 700 signatures to get a 0.6 mill levy on the ballot this November to save the program. But that won't be necessary -- at least, for now. The school board has voted to reinstate the program for this upcoming academic year.
According to the group's web site, the board now plans to hold a special election in the spring. It would ask voters to sign off on future funding of the ROTC, plus bring back other programs that were cut, such as several teaching positions and weekend athletic transportation.
