MONROE, Mich. -
The first day of school can sometimes be scary for the younger ones, especially the part when it comes to getting on a crowded bus with lots of other kids.
Through the eyes of a young student, the first day of school can be pretty intimidating and bus drivers do their best to put the young ones at ease. But they say they need the help of parents to explain to their children the importance of behaving on the bus. After all it goes hand in hand with their number one rule of safety.
" It's imperative that it's instilled in them, it's for their safety. We have all the safety of our students in mind the whole time while we're driving. It would just be very beneficial if the parents would enforce it too." Shelley Cormier, Transportation Dir. Monroe Public Schools
When getting on or off the bus, students should wait for the bus drivers signal and never cross the street behind the bus. And once students make it to their seat, bus drivers want them to stay there!
"It's important that they stay in their seat because and that's reinforced from the parents to stay in their seats because those seats are designed to absorb any sort of injuries when the bus driver has to apply the brakes."
Experts also say that it takes about a month before bus drivers learn the names of all the children on their route. You can help make it easy for them by sending a name tag along with your child for the first couple weeks of school. Also make sure children know their home address, the home telephone number and know their parents or guardians first names. It's all to make sure that they get to where they need to be safely. Public schools in Michigan start the week of September 4th.
