Mayor meets with staff at Moody Manor

Posted: Updated:

It's a crime that rocked the community! Two sisters shot while sleeping on the floor in their home at Moody Manor apartments. ...one died.

"I was at the project this morning and in front of the unit is all those stuffed animals and its just so sad to think of those young lives snuffed out for the worst of reasons," said the president of Vistula Management Company John Kiely.

John Kiely is the president of the company that manages moody manor. Tuesday he sat down with Toledo Mayor Mike Bell to discuss safety and making the complex a bench mark project for other housing developments in the city.  Kiely says they're working with police to improve the security cameras

"As you know there's gang activity in the neighborhood and this creates a certain level of fear that's really our biggest challenge to over come that," said Kiely.

He shared a letter with me that he sent to the mayor outlining their meeting. Moody Manor will use more off duty police officers.

The mayor says the complex is part of an economic development drive in that area

"We really need to make sure they are doing well because we are going to be as good as what is seen as our weakest spot. So what we need to do is figure out how to fix that," said Mayor Mike Bell.

They say the first step is getting the community involved and working with HUD to weed out the trouble makers.

"These young women are not always guilty but their units get used by gang members and we are going to be working very closely with mayor and the law department to tighten up the procedures by which we can evict people if in anyway they are connected to gang activity," said Kiely.

Managers at the complex have also agreed to make the housing development look nicer so there's not some many bare earth spots. A make-over that residents, managers and city leaders hope will improve life in the area
