3 "likely" cases of West Nile in Lucas Co.

Posted: Updated:

One of the worst West Nile virus outbreaks in U.S. history is now hitting home.  The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department says there are three likely cases of the mosquito born illness.

"Two of them sick with it now are both very critically ill," Dr. David Grossman, Toledo-Lucas County Health Commissioner, said.

That news makes prevention more important.  The Toledo Area Sanitary District is hard at working trying to get rid of the pesky bugs.

"We usually do it from beginning of June to at least mid-September, sometimes into October depending on the weather," Jeff Neeld, Chief Supervisor at TASD said.

4 drivers hit the street each night, spraying pesticide to kill the mosquitos.  Neeld says its an important job, especially with the West Nile virus on the rise.  Even though local numbers are low, Dr. Grossman is worried.  He expects the numbers to continue to rise and he's urging everyone to take precautions.

Your best bet is to avoid the mosquitoes all together, but if you can't wear clothes that cover your skin and avoid going outside in the evenings.  Though, it may sound scary, Grossman insists there is no need to panic.  However, if you experience muscle aches, a significant fever, trouble breathing or severe headaches after being bitted, he says get to the doctor.

"I don't think this is the peak of West Nile," Grossman said.
