WAPAKONETA, Ohio -

People all over the world are mourning the loss of NASA legend Neil Armstrong.

Especially in Neil Armstrong's hometown of Wapakoneta. It's also home to the Armstrong Air and Space Museum.  Outside the flags are at half staff and a lone bouquet sits at the entrance of the museum.

Inside Neil Armstrong's profile amongst the wall of astronauts is now memorialized with a black ribbon.

Museum director Chris Burton said,  "It was just shocking, saddening moment. Certainly some disbelief."  He describes Armstrong as a very smart and polite man who was very active in education initiatives at the museum. "That's always been his emphasis, is trying to improve engineering education to get kids interested in aviation and some of the last communications that I had with him were along those lines."

Space exploration is a huge part of the town. Many here say just about every kids growing up in Wapakoneta dreams of becoming an astronaut like Armstrong.

Mary McViker says Armstrong inspired her cousin to become an astronaut  "It's really sad. I mean he's a legend, it's really cool. I have a cousin who's an astronaut, Kevin Ford.  He's in Russia training and Neil Armstrong was an idol to him."

Museum visitor Pat O'Briant said, " Being a child of the 60s, I grew up following space and stuff. I've always wanted to be an astronaut but never made it, but always looked up to Neil Armstrong."

Armstrong leaves behind quite a legacy. Even with his passing,  images from the first walk on the moon on July 20, 1969 will forever live on.

The museum plans on honoring Armstrong's life with a special service sometime in the near future.
