Toledoan earns living playing video games

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Think you've got game? Think again. You're about to be schooled in the online arena of virtual fighting.

Toledoan Carl " Perfect Legend" White is not just a button-masher, he's made a career out of playing video games.

Perfect Legend is the reigning world champion for the latest version of Mortal Kombat. He's taken the top spot the past two years in a row beating out up to 500 other contestants.

To Carl, this is not just fun and games; this is serious.

"It's like learning a new subject in school or something. That's how deep it is. And you have to be not only, you know, get an A+, you have to be the best person in the class."

Carl says he fell into the world of competitive gaming when he was 16. Now he has trophies, medals and even his own trading card!

"I think it's neat. Maybe in the future, they'll be worth some money. That means I'll keep some myself, so I can sell 'em on eBay."

He's also had a hand in developing some titles in his favorite series: "Dead or Alive." Developing could be the future for this worldwide warrior whose fingers or fury leave other avatars in the digital dust.

This weekend, Perfect Legend is playing at the Major League Gaming Tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina.

You can watch streaming video of his progress at mlgpro.com. Carl says he typically uses the Mortal Kombat character Kung-Lao in the tourneys.
