Expert to review UTMC kidney program

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

A nationally recognized expert is headed to the University of Toledo Medical Center to review the hospitals living kidney donor program.

UTMC president Dr. Lloyd Jacobs apologized again today for the mishap during a kidney transplant surgery.

"I was terribly sorry. Incidents do occur people make mistakes surgery in medicine is a human undertaking and human beings are by nature imperfect," UTMC president Dr. Lloyd Jacobs.

The hospital voluntarily suspended its living donor program. An internal investigation was launched and the United Network for Organ Sharing also known as UNOS was notified.

Dr Jacobs says a expert in renal transplant is headed to Toledo.

"Later on this week a nationally recognized expert will visit and advice us to go over our process and safe guards."

For the last week administrators have been going over the program's policies.

"No it was not a mix up between two kidneys it was inexplicable human error its not at all clear why suddenly for no apparent reason a normal committed diligent human being will do something that doesn't fit," said UTMC's president.

UTMC's living donor program is one of the most successful programs in the country according to the website

"We have an excellent program with a 98% success rate as you know. We pioneered in living related donors chains, but interesting enough human error creeps in even in excellent programs"

Two nurses are on paid administrative leave. Dr. Jacobs says other could be disciplined too. Investigators are reviewing the safe guards that should have been in place to avoid a mistake like this one

"There are strict protocols and policies and procedures on how to do that when the kidney should be placed how it should be labeled and all of that is being investigated, " said Jacobs.

Dr. Jacobs expects the program to be reinstated in several weeks.
