Teacher back in classroom after cancer battle

Posted: Updated:

A lot has happened since we last spoke with Kaylene Kramer. The first grade teacher endured another round of chemo and in April, she had a single mastectomy.

Kramer tells 13abc, "I developed a serious infection so I spent 7 days in the hospital from that and then in June I started radiation, August 7th was my last radiation treatment."

It's been a long road to get to this day.  It's the first day of school at Lakota Elementary.  Today Mrs Kramer doesn't  have to "skype" to read to her class. Although Mrs. Kramer feels great, her challenges may not be over.

Kramer tells 13abc, "I just had the genetics testing done...if I test positive for the cancer gene...then I will decide to have the other breast removed and go from there."

Kramer says her students were excited to see her this morning.

"I was fortunate enough to be able to skype them during kindergarten ...some of them have seen me during chemo treatments. Many of them said during our open house last night ...I'm so glad you're getting your hair back ...so they knew exactly what was going on,"

Students say their proud to be in  Mrs, Kramer class. First grader  Andrew Matz tells 13abc, "my sister had her, my brother had her,and I really love to have her..."

It's the love that empowers this teacher to overcome cancer once and for all.  Kramer tells 13abc, "Hopefully they see the hard work ethic also, you know wow my teacher had cancer...but she still came to work everyday she was still with us somehow and hopefully they are able to develop that too."

Getting cancer wasn't in Mrs Kramer's "lesson plan" so to speak, but her experience will shape these first graders for years to come.
