MONROE COUNTY, Mich. -

Michigan farmers say the lack of rain and the intense heat this summer have really taken a toll. They're finding out today that there may be some financial help.

The USDA has declared the state of Michigan a natural disaster area and that's all because the summer's drought and heat. All 83 counties are all classified as primary disaster areas qualifying farmers for low interest emergency loans. Farmers have up to eight months to apply for loans up to half a million dollars with 2.25 percent interest rate. The federal aid will help farmers dealing with crop or livestock losses.

"Farmers who suffered a 30 percent loss or greater in production or any physical losses as a result of that heat or excessive heat are now eligible for those low interest emergency loans that are available through the farmers service agency."

The Michigan counties were among 128 counties declared disaster areas this week bringing the nationwide total to 1,820 counties in the United States.
