As the 2012-2013 women's golf season opens up for Lourdes University, third year head coach Scott Simon has an experienced, but young squad of ladies is ready to take to the course. Simon has four returnees from last year's squad and has also added a transfer with collegiate experience.
"I think we have a very solid group of six players this year," Simon stated. "Even though we are very young with just one junior as well as four sophomores and a freshman, I believe we can do well. We are shooting to finish in the top half of the WHAC this season."
This year's roster has a large Northwest Ohio flavor to it. Brooke Darah, the lone junior on the mainly underclass roster, hails from Sylvania Northview High School and has led the way for the Gray Wolves over the program's first two seasons. She averaged 86.1 as a freshman and last year posted a school-record 81. During her career at Lourdes, 13 of her 21 rounds have been in the 80s.
Kallie Breyfogle, a Sylvania Southview product, had Lourdes second-best scoring average in 2011-2012 at 95.1, and is poised for a breakout sophomore season. Roberta Craider and Lindsay Lehman also return for their sophomore seasons after gaining a year's worth of collegiate experience. Craider is the only player on the roster from outside the Northwest Ohio region, having played her prep golf at Padua Franciscan High School while Lehman is from just down the road at Otsego High School.
The two newcomers to the roster this season are sisters, Heather and Haley Steiner. Heather is a transfer from Findlay where she played nine rounds for the Oilers. Both are Tiffin Calvert High School where Haley was just the second player in school history to qualify for the district championships.
"Brooke has been our top performer over the last two years, but I really expect Kallie and Heather to compete with Brooke for the top spot this season," added Simon.
Lourdes will open the season on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at the first of four Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference jamborees in Caledonia, Mich. They Gray Wolves will close the fall season Oct. 14 hosting the Lourdes Fall Finale in Aurora, Ohio.
