New program to spot illegal activity

As we get closer to the Labor Day holiday, law enforcement agencies across Northwest Ohio are stepping up patrols.

"We've got 100% manpower coverage scheduled, Lieutenant Kevin Thomas, Ohio Highway Patrol, said. "We have several hours of federal and state overtime grants."

Troopers will be on the lookout for speeders, seat belt violators and, of course, impaired drivers.  OSHP is also launching a new program to help stop illegal activity.  It's called "Community Shield: Contributing to a Better Ohio."

"We're looking for people to be involved and be another set of eyes on the road for us," Lt. Thomas said.

The program comes on the heels of a wrong way crash this week in Erie County.  Dash cam video shows Joseph Kozar, 67, ramming a trooper's patrol car on the Ohio turnpike in Oxford Township.  Investigators say Kozar got on the turnpike going east in the westbound lanes Tuesday night.  Now, he's behind bars in Erie County on OVI charges.  Lt. Thomas says this is a perfect example of what troopers are trying to stop.

"People in their own car will see a lot more on the roadways that what we see in patrol cars," he said.  "When somebody sees a highway patrol cruiser, a lot of times it stands out and people change their driving habits to make sure they aren't standing out."
