UTMC surgeon loses director title temporarily

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

A University of Toledo surgeon has temporarily lost his director title. Kidney transplant surgeon Dr. Michael Rees has lost his title following the ongoing investigations of a kidney transplant error.

UTMC shut down its live kidney transplant program last week after a kidney was rendered unusable, reportedly put in with the medical waste instead of going to its intended recipient.

Rees is still a surgeon at the medical center, but he is losing his title at least until the investigation is complete.

Meanwhile, a Texas surgeon began reviewing the live donor kidney transplant program at UTMC today. Dr. Marlon Levy was hired to evaluate all the program's procedures.

He arrived in Toledo Thursday night.
