TOLEDO, Ohio -

A nationally recognized expert is putting the live kidney donor program under the microscope at the University of Toledo Medical Center.

The review comes after the hospital shut down the program because a botched transplant left a kidney unusable.

Doctor Marlon Levy is a surgeon from Texas.  He spent Friday in meetings at UTMC.

Also, UTMC replaced the director of the transplant program until the investigation is complete.

Doctor Michael Rees has temporarily lost his title as Director of UTMC's program.

Hospital leaders took the action as the investigation continues into a kidney transplant ruined by human error.

Earlier this month the AP reports a kidney was put in with medical waste instead of being put into the donor's sister.

Doctor Jeffrey Gold, the VP of Health Affairs at UTMC, says Dr. Rees was involved in that specific surgery, however the demotion does not mean Dr. Rees did anything wrong.

"Just to make sure we have a healthy separation between the individuals who are reviewing the program and those that were involved in the case that lead to this review," says Dr. Gold.

Dr. Rees remains working at UTMC as a surgeon. However, two nurses and one administrator have already been put on paid leave.

The entire live kidney transplant program is under the microscope.  It's a program that has been in place for 40 years.

"This is one of the oldest, most established kidney transplant programs in the United States," says Dr. Gold.

Friday a Texas surgeon Dr. Marlon Levy and his team began reviewing the program's policies and procedures to make sure this kind of mistake never happens again.

"We're doing everything we can now to get the program back online in a stable and responsible way," says Dr. Gold. "We remain and have always been deeply sorry that this mistake occurred.  We're sorry for the family and the patients involved."

The program could be reinstated as early as in the next few weeks.

Dr. Gold says 975 people in the program are waiting for treatment.  That number counts donors and recipients.   He says the "overwhelming majority" are waiting for UTMC's live kidney transplant program to be reinstated.
