It's a tough game to begin with, but factor in steamy temperatures and it becomes a different ball game.
"In this type of weather it's tough, definitely," Kevin Koger, Former University of Michigan tight end and Whitmer graduate, said.
For four years, Koger played on Whitmer's field. He knows all too well how the heat affects the players.
"The turf adds at least 15-20 degrees, so its going to be important for the kids to hydrate," he said.
Not only that, but the equipment also adds weight and layers, making it that much more important to drink plenty of water.
"There's a lot that goes into making sure everyone stays safe," Aaron Sage, a certified athletic trainer, told 13abc.
He says the Panther's coaching staff stepped up efforts to keep all the player hydrated. For starters, they brought in more than 100 gallons of water to split between both benches.
The biggest concerns on the field are heat stroke and heat exhaustion. And that's why Sage says they'll be paying close attention to each player, looking for the signs.
"If they stop sweating, kids who are sweating profusely, changes in behavior, disorientation and changes in normal actions," Sage said.
Both coaches and players are hoping this is the last of the dog days of summer, but if it's not, they'll be ready.
There were no reported heat related injuries at Friday's game.
