Woman battles brain cancer with help from her son

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

With his mother struggling to work while she battled brain cancer and his father unable to contribute financially because of a back injury, Demetrius Phoenix decided to organize a fundraiser to help out his parents.

"There's a lot of bills piling up right now, she's the only one employed because unfortunately my father, he's off work from restriction and they're still denying him from his workers comp so we're just trying to raise money so we can get these bill paid.. a little bit of financial relief."

Casandra Carson-Phoenix first found out she had brain cancer when a brain scan was performed after an unrelated accident.

"I fell down the basement stairs. I had no clue what was going on but, they took me to the hospital in '09 and I found out I had brain cancer."

Chuck Phoenix says his wife is staying strong. "It's a very hurtful thing. She's a very strong woman. Even though she's dealing with what she's dealing with, she still got up and tried to make it to work." Chuck says it's been hard not to be able to support his family. He's been unable to work because of his back injury.

"Honestly the thing about it that really hurts is when you know that your the type of person that's been there for people over the years, whether family and/or friends, then when your down and out and no one is around, that's the thing that really gets to you."

Donations can be made to the family via The Battling Brain Cancer fund at any Key Bank.
