CLEVELAND (AP) - A Cleveland man has sued a Westlake cardiologist and St. John Medical Center over a potentially unnecessary stent placed in his heart Feb. 9.
The Plain Dealer reported Saturday that 53-year-old Anthony Barber filed the suit against the hospital and cardiologist Harry Persaud Friday. It came days after the hospital sent Barber and 22 other patients letters saying the device used to open arteries in their hearts may have been inserted needlessly.
After staff questioned one doctor's work earlier this year, the hospital sought an independent review. An expert determined stents the doctor placed may have been medically unnecessary in 23 of 30 cases.
The hospital did not identify the doctor, who disputes the allegations. Both the letter and lawsuit name Persaud. A message was left seeking comment.
