Toddler shootings unite neighbors to make change

TOLEDO, Ohio -

The shooting of two toddlers last month has community leaders in Central Toledo stepping up efforts to make a change.

Residents are bringing back the old Warren Sherman Festival in attempts to unify the community and stand up against the growing violence.

After years out of commission, neighborhood activists say it's time for the community to gather to know each other and to stand together against crime in Central and North Toledo.

Festival volunteer Zettie Williams says, "We need to re-establish strong leadership in the community. We can't depend on city officials to do for us. We need to stand up on our own, pull up our own boot straps."

The escalating summer violence in these areas had the committee planning this festival for some time.

But after last month's shooting of two toddlers at the Moody Manor apartments, residents are aching for a major turnaround.

Especially the family of one-year old Keondra Hooks who was shot and killed while she slept.

Her two year old sister Leondra recovered from her bullet wound and is the festivals honored guest. Leondra attended the festival with her family. Her uncle Terrence gist even wrote a song about the crime that changed their family's life.

"When I first heard what happened I was devastated, because without you baby girl I don't feel the same. You should never kill a baby I don't care what you claim."

A number of local artists and food vendors donated their services to support this festivals mission.  And it's also helping Leondra's family heal.

Leondra's aunt Bernice Neal said, "It makes me feel a lot better that people is trying to get together and respect one another cause things is getting harder by the day, for everybody not just our family.  There's a lot of things going on that just keeps going on and hopefully one day we'll turn over a new leaf around here."

No one has been charged in for the Moody Manor shooting, but three men are locked up charged with obstructing justice in connection with that deadly crime.
