Detroit teachers get bonuses despite $75 mil deficit

DETROIT (AP) - Emergency Manager Roy Roberts is handing out incentive-based bonuses to 8,000 Detroit Public Schools employees - despite the district's $75 million deficit.

The Detroit News says each $5 million of general fund operating surplus the district has at the end of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 fiscal years will determine bonus amounts.

DPS projects an $11.9 million surplus for 2011-12. Detroit Federation of Teachers President Keith Johnson says most teachers should receive $1,600 to $1,800 bonuses.

Bonuses are expected to cost the district $1.7 million.

DPS employees received a 10% pay cut last year that continues this year. Roberts imposed a contract on all union employees July 1.

Board of Education President LaMar Lemmons questioned the bonuses

Roberts says a 5-year deficit elimination plan will eliminate the deficit.
