MDA car show going strong even without telethon

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

It's a local Labor Day tradition. Each Labor Day weekend the Muscular Dystrophy Association holds its annual car show.

It's especially important for the group now that the Jerry Lewis Telethon is a thing of the past. What used to be a two-day live event hosted by the legendary entertainer is now a taped three-hour special featuring musical performances.

Car show organizer Skeeter Oliver said, "The car show goes on. This is our 16th year. Fifteen years, we've gone $250,000."

According to Mike Peitz, "Hopefully, we can continue to keep the awareness out there with the show going on today."

Many who pitched in with the telethon in years past are now focused solely on this event.

Bill Taylor came out to the event with his son "Not only is at good cause, it's also a good time."

Especially when you can hitch a ride on a trike that's a Harley-Davidson in the front and a Volkswagen Beetle in the back."

Dave Reed says he found the Harley/Beetle hybrid years ago,

"Somebody built it a long time ago. It was titled in 1978 as a trike, and I bought it broken down, beat up, totally rebuilt it, made it the way it is now."

Organizers hop the fun adds up to funding for research and treatment of muscular dystrophy.
