TOLEDO, Ohio -

The president stopped by Rick's City Diner this morning for breakfast before he made his way to Scott high school.

When President Barack Obama walked into Rick's Diner on Bancroft shocked customers broke out into applause.  Diann Higgins is a cook at the restaurant.

"He kissed my cheek. Can you imagine the President of the United States coming up to you and kissing you on the cheek," said employee Diann Higgins.

He signed a menu and sat at a table and chatted with three autoworkers. Customer Mark Mockensturm says the president was friendly and engaging.

"I was at the table right next to him and there were three autoworkers here and he was getting their input on how the auto industry was coming back. He was trying to get the real details like why quality is improving and how it is on the line he was really listening to what they said," said Customer Mark Mockensturm.

He took pictures with everyone. The owner of the diner, Rick Salem , told me he a got a call this morning telling him to get ready a special guest would be dropping by.

"A sitting president the first black president of the united states of course I was excited it was wonderful, " said owner Rick Salem

74 year old Martha Beckett has worked at the diner for 22 years. She says he took time to meet everyone

"I really don't have words it was just overwhelming. that's all I can say." said employee Martha Beckett.

The president ordered sweet tea and fruit. Megan Emch waited on him. She says his he footed the bill for his entire team.

It came to $13.50. He gave her a twenty dollar bill. She says she got to keep the change

"It was wonderful it's a great privileged," said waitress Megan Emch.

Customers say the energy and excitement in the diner was electric

"He shook my hand and he shook everybody's hand and told my grandson get a good education and he's going to need that," said customer Roxanne Mitchell

"There was a little boy who fell and hit his head. he was crying they couldn't get him to stop. he pulled out some candy and handed it to the little boy and he was like (looks surprised) he stopped crying just like that it was very cute," said customer Mark Mockensturm.

One and a half year old Liam Trinh apparently enjoyed the presidential M&M's he got from the president.
