EVENING NEWS HEADLINES - SEPTEMBER 4, 2012

NEW LOCAL NEWS

1. UT ENROLLMENT

The University of Toledo is seeing a smaller student population this year. New numbers show 21,500 undergraduates and graduate students enrolled this semester. That compares with 22,624 last fall. UT's president Lloyd Jacobs says cost may be part of the reason for the decline. Despite that, the university says the student population is "academically stronger."

2. SKYCOP UPDATE

Toledo Police chief Derrick Diggs tells 13abc that as of Friday at least 20 Skycop cameras have been installed around the city. They are a portion of the 150 cameras that'll be put up in Toledo to monitor high crime areas. Officers will then monitor those live feeds to stop crimes in progress. No word on when the surveillance cameras will be operational. Memphis, Tennessee has a similar system that police say leads to an average of 100 arrests each year.

NEW STATE NEWS

3. BRIDGE BOMB PLOT

(AP) - A federal judge has scheduled change-of-plea hearings for three of the four remaining defendants charged with plotting to bomb a highway bridge in Ohio. Such a hearing usually signals a defendant plans to plead guilty. The three had previously entered not guilty pleas. A plea change by the trio would leave only Joshua Stafford facing trial.

4. BURNED WOMAN ARRESTS

(AP) - An Ohio sheriff has announced two additional arrests in the gruesome death of a woman found covered in burns and wailing in agony on the side of a rural road. A driver found 29-year-old Celeste Fronsman Aug. 26 on a road northeast of Zanesville. She had been raped and burned, and had a strap around her neck. She died two days later at a Columbus hospital.

NEW NATIONAL NEWS

5. PENN STATE COSTS

(AP) - Penn State's costs for legal fees, consultants and public relations firms hired to help deal with the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal have reached nearly $17 million. Penn State says the costs are not paid by student tuition, taxpayer funds or donations. It says the costs will be covered by insurance policies or interest payments on loans it makes.

6. APPLE HACKER

(AP) - The FBI is disputing a computer hacker group's claim that it stole personal identification data on millions of Apple device owners from an FBI agent's laptop. The FBI says it never asked for and never possessed the database that AntiSec is posting on a website. The group released a link to a database of more than 1 million Apple device identification numbers.
