NEW LOCAL NEWS

1. BANKRUPTCY FILINGS

Filings in US Bankruptcy court in Toledo are down. The number of cases filed dropped 7% last month compared to the same time last year. So far in 2012, there were 15 percent fewer filings than in the first eight months of 2011.

2. HOLLYWOOD CASINO

Toledo's Hollywood Casino has been open for a little more than three months and it's celebrating a milestone. Last month the casino passed the million visitor mark. The general Manager says since then, the number has topped 1.1 million.

3. ANN ROMNEY

Mitt Romney's wife campaigned for her husband in Findlay, Ohio today. Ann Romney told the rally for women at the University of Findlay that she understands people's problems and cited her battle against multiple sclerosis as evidence of that. The wealthy family has been accused of leading a charmed life and not being able to relate to average people.

4. BRIDGE BOMB PLOT

(AP) - Three men accused of plotting to bomb a highway bridge in Ohio have admitted their roles in the scheme. The FBI says the public was never in danger even though the target was a highway bridge over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park between Cleveland and Akron. Twenty-year-olds Connor Stevens and Brandon Baxter and 26-year-old Douglas Wright pleaded guilty to all three counts against them today in Akron before a federal judge. They face 30 years to life in prison.

5. BURNED HORSE

(AP) - A horse that was badly burned after someone set fire to it in northwestern Pennsylvania is headed for veterinary care in Ohio. The Erie Times-News reports the animal named Northstar is on its way to Ohio State University. State police say the 6-year-old quarterhorse was doused in fuel and set aflame in Athens Township over the weekend of August 25th. No arrests have been made.

6. WEST NILE

(AP) - Health officials are calling 2012 the worst year ever for West Nile virus cases in Texas, which has seen about half the country's deaths from the virus this year. There have been at least 43 deaths in Texas from at least 510 cases of the most serious form of the illness. Officials say numbers are expected to increase through mid-October.

7. BURIED TAR

(AP) - BP says Hurricane Isaac's waves exposed deposits of buried tar on the Louisiana coast that were left over from its massive oil spill in 2010. A stretch of beach near Fourchon has been closed after large tar mats were found. Since Isaac's surge has receded, tar balls and oil have been reported in Alabama and Louisiana on beaches that previously had appeared clean.
