Pro weightlifter charged with home invasion at Adrian College

Posted: Updated:

He's not The Hulk, he's a professional weightlifter and according to police he started smashing down doors, busted hinges, and toppled furniture.  Some called it a rampage. It all happened inside this student housing complex on West Michigan at Adrian College.

Around 11 o'clock Saturday night, students told police that a huge man smashed through four apartment doors, apparently at random. The police chief says: the man hit one student in the face, but his injuries were minor.

Campus Safety Director Wade Beitel says, "He was a visitor of another student and for whatever reason he lost his composure."

Adrian Police chief Vincent Emrick says officers tried to reason with the man, "We attempted to speak with him. He became irate, came at one of the officers swinging his arms and he was tasered and taken into custody."

The suspect is 29-year old Dain Soppelsa, from Kalamazoo. He's 325-pounds and said to be a professional weightlifter. Chief Emrick say officers had to use a stun gun to get Soppelsa under control.

Right now, Soppelsa is being held at the Lenawee County Jail on $225,000 bond. He faces four counts of home invasion and a charge of obstructing official business.
