13 named storms in 1st half of hurricane season

Posted: Updated:
BERMUDA -

Monday, September 10th will mark the climatological peak of hurricane season for the Atlantic, and it essentially serves as the midpoint as well.  This has been an active hurricane season so far, with 13 named storms through the first half.  Among the 13 storms, 7 became hurricanes, and only one became a major hurricane (Michael briefly reached Category 3 strength, last week).  Hurricane Isaac has received the most media attention, as it made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on August 28, just to the southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River, with winds of 80 mph.

Among the active storms this Sunday, Tropical Storm Leslie has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph as of 8 AM, and it is passing just east of the island of Bermuda.  Bermuda is facing some of the heavy rainbands today, with gusty winds that are occasionally gusting over 40 mph.

Farther east, Hurricane Michael is churning over the open waters of the central Atlantic.  Michael has sustained winds of 100 mph this Sunday morning, but the storm is not a threat to land.

Another tropical wave is moving west, from the west coast of Africa, but it is still poorly organized.
