Safety in Bedford schools

Posted: Updated:
BEDFORD, Ohio -

Two Bedford moms want to keep the halls of all the schools in the district safe. Bedford mom, Amy Driehorst is the co-founder of Bedford Students Protected through Combining Area Resources for Educational Safety. She's raising funds to keep a second school resource officer from getting a pink slip.

"Not because Bedford schools aren't safe they are safe and we think a lot of that is because we have two officers," said BSP Cares co-founder Amy Driehorst

According to this letter obtained by 13abc. The school superintendent told the sheriff's office the district doesn't have the "funds budgeted to utilize a second liaison officer." The moms need to raise $80,000. Driehorst says they have a little over $33,000.

"We have payment due October 1st to the district of 20,000 and we are a little under seven thousand short of that goal," said Driehorst.

Deputy sheriff Randy Sehl job would be cut and he would most likely go back to the streets. The school board says the only way to save the position is to cut in other areas. Bedford Jr High School's principal applauds the efforts of the two moms. He says safety is important.

"It's nice that kids see police officers in a positive light in an approachable atmosphere its not in a negative sense. They'll stop in our health classrooms or our kindergarten classroom and other programs they do at the elementary level," said principal Roderick Hurley.

Principal Hurley, the resource officers and this mom hope other parents will step up to keep
the schools safe.

"This boils down to $29.00 per Bedford Public school families per year," said Driehorst
