Family of 9/11 victim now calls Toledo home

Posted: Updated:

The tragedy of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, extend far beyond New York City. The family of one of the victims now lives in the Toledo area, and they say this city has helped them move forward. This is a story of heartache, healing and forgiveness.

Vanessa Williams says its hard to believe that 11 years have gone by since her stepfather was killed. She says the years have not dulled the pain, but she has learned to cope, thanks in part to the fact that her family is once again living in the same city.

Vanessa smiles when she remembers the incredible man the world lost on September 11, 2001,"He was amazing, an awesome person. He was caring, loving and fun. He also loved history which makes it interesting that his passing is part of history."

Her stepfather Robert Gschaar had only been working at the World Trade Center for several months when the terrorists hit the towers, "We are not promised tomorrow. We live in a free country and we have enemies. We have to be sure we are there for one another. We need to help one another we need to pray for one another to keep this country strong."

Vanessa's faith and family have carried her through,"It's hard, but you find something inside you that keeps you going, my wonderful, 9 year old son I just look at his face and everything goes away."

Vanessa grew up in New York, but since the terrorist attacks, the entire family has moved to Toledo. Her older sister and her husband were living here and after September 11th, Vanessa's family, her other two sisters, their families and her mother Myrta all eventually moved here, "People ask why Toledo. Toledo is very different than what we are used to, but is has been a restoration for my family, it brought us all closer together."

As the years have passed, Vanessa has found a way to let go of her anger, "Have you forgiven the people who killed your stepfather? Absolutely. How difficult was that? It took time, it did not come easily or right away."

Robert's remains were not identified until several years after the attack. They also found his wedding ring and his wallet which contained a special two dollar bill. Rob and Myrta had both been married before, so they each kept a two dollar bill in their wallets to symbolize their second chance. His wallet, the ring and the two dollar bills will all be part of the 9-11 museum in New York City that is scheduled to open next year.
