Voters weigh in on new early voting location

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of Lucas County residents will cast a ballot this November, before the actual election day through the early voting option.

The county board of election chose the Summit Street YMCA as this year's location because of it's close to public transportation, has the necessary space and already has phone and Internet service installed.

Some residents say it's a great choice while others say it's not convenient.

"It's close to the 280 bridge and it's close to downtown," says Christopher Titus who lives in the Old West End.  He doesn't plan to cast an early ballot, but is glad it's an option.  "I think it's more or less a central spot between Downtown, Oregon and the West End."

"Some people may feel it's out of their way," says Toledo's Domonique Garcia.  "If they stay in North Toledo, they may not want go, even though it's not that far."

Associate political science professor Melissa Miller believes the early vote is extremely critical and its location.  The BGSU teacher says it could make a difference, especially in Northwest Ohio, a key battleground area.

"Early voting is relatively new but has become really important to both the Democratic and Republican campaigns," comments Miller.  "And it's no more important than in this election year, 2012."
