Total U.S. deportations climbing to record levels

Posted: Updated:

The Department of Homeland Security is reporting record deportations so far this year. the Department said that more than 366,000 illegal immigrants have been deported up to august, and they claim that number will reach more than 400,000 by the end of the year.

Ninety-three percent of those deported were from either Mexico or Central America.

Democrats and Republicans are still sparring over the immigration issue. Arizona continues to be in the spotlight with their controversial immigration policies. The newest one allows police officers to stop anyone they believe to be in the country illegally.

However, thousands of immigrants, who were brought to the country as children, were today allowed to stay in the country with two-year work permits as a result of the Dream Act, which President Obama sent into motion earlier this year.

This comes weeks after about 72,000 applications were filed. It was expected to take months for them to be approved, but Homeland Security said the process didn't take as long as expected.
