NAACP demands TPS reinstate administrator

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

The NAACP fired off a letter to Toledo Public School leaders urging them to reinstate Spring Elementary's Assistant Principal.

Sandra Meeks-Speller is on paid suspension after being accused of using force to discipline students, intimidating teachers, and making racial comments.

Toledo's NAACP President, Pastor Kevin Bedford, wrote a letter and sent it to the school board. It states, "Nothing ignites our community more than knowing that one of our best and brightest is being unfairly treated...both retired TPS personnel and community members have shared their experiences with the routine mishandling of similar cases by TPS."

"I understand that the board has more than sufficient information to make a decision regarding her re-instatement. I urge you to avoid delays. Resist kicking the can down the road by involving costly outside referees."

The NAACP President then urged the school board to make a resolution before October 1.

School board member Bob Vasquez says the district brought in a referee at Meeks Speller's request. He tells 13abc, "I don't think it reflects badly on Toledo Public Schools...I think it reflects good upon us, because we're allowing one of our employees to afford herself to every right that she has under the law."

So, will this case be wrapped up by October 1? Vasquez says it depends. "We don't know when the referee will set the date," he says.

And there is no word on how much the referee will cost. The treasurer estimates anywhere between 8 and 15 thousand dollars.  Meeks-Speller and the President of the NAACP did not want to comment on an ongoing case.
