Casino money may help Rossford roads

Posted: Updated:

Toledo's Hollywood Casino gave the city of Rossford a $200,000 grant and the city's finance committee hopes to use some for road projects.

Rossford resident, Helen Leganik said, "There's a lot of bad roads, I think."

But at Tuesdays council meeting, the finance committee recommended using more than half of the casino money to fix the roads.  That would give the city an extra $125,000 to invest in infrastructure.

"We have some residential streets that need a total reconstruction," Edward Ciecka, Rossford's city administrator said. "That's an issue that the city council has been trying to grapple with and how to address the reconstruction."

Ciecka says the city has $6 million worth of road problems and those who drive them know first hand.

Leganik has lived in her home in Rossford for 54 years.  She says it's about time some attention was given to the pot-hole ridden streets.

"I'm for it, anything that will improve the roads," she said.

Dave Marcinek lives just a few blocks away, and he also says bring on the construction.

"They can start with Windsor drive that would be great," he said.  "I know a lot of the side streets have been neglected, and any money they can use towards repairing the streets would be great."

But before the orange barrels go up, city council has to sign off.  Still no word when that vote could happen.

The rest of the money was used to upgrade the city's public safety radios.  It also helped with overtime costs racked up during the casino's first weeks.
