HUNTINGTON, W.V. - Toledo moved up two spots in Tuesday's final round to finish in fifth place out of 16 teams at the Marshall Invitational. The Rockets tied for the best round of the day with their even-par 284 to post a 54-hole team score of 13-over par 865 (292-289-284). The event was the Rockets' first tournament of the 2012-13 campaign as well as their first competition under first-year Head Coach Jamie Broce.
"We just had a really good team effort today and I think everyone's confidence is growing," Broce said. "We did a great job of scraping and clawing out there until the very end. That's what you need to do when there's a logjam in the standings."
Freshman Otto Black led the Rockets in today's final round with a two-under par 69 to finish tied for 18th place in his first collegiate tournament at two-over 215 (73-73-69). Sophomores Mike Lancaster (T-44th/77-73=71=221) and Pat Cermak (T-67th/78-78-71=227) each carded even-par 71's, while junior Oliver Holtsberry tied for 35th place at six-over par 219 (74-72-73) after shooting a two-over 73. Sophomore Chris Selfridge led UT in the tourney with an even-par 213 to finish tied for 12th place in the individual standings.
Virginia Tech captured the team title with an impressive 16-under 836, 17 strokes ahead of Ohio State and Marshall. Xavier's Korey Ward captured medalist honors at nine-under par 204 (69-66-69) and edged Marshall's Nathan Kerns (69-67-69) by one shot.
Toledo will return to action early next week when it hosts the Inverness Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 17-18.
