New shooting range open in Maumee

Posted: Updated:
MAUMEE, Ohio -

There has been a surge in concealed weapon permits in Ohio this year. Some think the increase is in part a response to recent shootings in the news, leading to a concern for personal safety.

Now a new shooting range has opened in Maumee. The owner of Shooters of Maumee, Keith Helminski, says he knew there was a demand for the business, but there was a lot of red tape to get through before he could open.

"From the business community we've had huge, huge support. Obviously, there are the regulations and the codes and what-have-you that you gotta abide by. Because, obviously, we're shooting guns in the house," he says. "But, for the most part, actually all throughout the process, the city, the ATF, all very, very good to work with."

Helminski says he's not surprised safety is a motivation for visitors.

"That actually is a real concern these days, at least from the standpoint to be able to protect yourself. You have a right to protect yourself, and I think that's what people are really getting into nowadays," he says.

Helminski says they also stress safety in gun handling at the range.

"There's a procedure that goes on. We go through all the basic safety elements of handling a gun," he says.

Helminski says shooting has become more main stream in recent years, an activity for the whole family.

"I'm floored at the amount of families that are into this," he says. "Fathers, sons, kids, girls, and, in fact, girls are actually most times better shots than the guys."

Helminski says Shooters is a high-end range. You pay per visit. There are 12 lanes available, and the range is approved for shooting rifles as well as handguns.
