TOLEDO, Ohio -
It's all quiet at Fire Station #3 on Bush Street.
"It's a sad time if
you like old buildings especially old fire stations"
Fire administrators closed the station
because the floor is cracked and has shifted.
Lt Matthew Hertzfeld says it's possible
the floor could collapse.
The beams under the basement are corroded.
Crews were moved to station 13 on front
street.
Lt. Hertzfeld says he doesn't expect a
major impact in calls for service
"Station 3 has been
relocated to station 13 which is just over a mile away fortunately with the
veterans memorial skyway it gives quick access back to their home
district," said Fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld
"You're still
coming across the bridge even if it's the upper river bridge its still going to
take more time and seconds mean a lot," said concerned citizen Ted
Grandowscz.
Ted Grandowscz says he understands the
safety concern, but believes this area needs a fire station.
"There safety is
the most important thing, but they should have been maintaining that station
for a long time which they put very little into it," said Grandowscz.
The historic fire station was built in the
1900's
It even has a fire poll which is still
used by firefighters
"These old stations
have a soul to them when you think of the firefighters who worked here before
you and you look at the history and the design of these stations they're really
unique," said Lt Hertzfeld.
The station also has an old hose tower
which crews used to hang and dry the hoses.
While fire administrators decide what to
do with the historic building crews will remain at station 13.
The mayor's office says they are working to
develop a plan to construct a new building to replace station three at a nearby
location.
A preliminarly site in Jamie Farr park on Summit street has
been identified to serve as a possible home for the new fire station
It will cost an estimated $3.5 million to
build the new station.
City leaders are working on securing funds
to begin the work
