Death Valley now holds the world's record high temperature

Posted: Updated:
DEATH VALLEY, California -
The hottest temperature ever recorded in the United States was in Death Valley, California on July 10, 1913. The temperature soared to 134 degrees. At that time it was the hottest temperature every recorded in the world. Just 9 years later on September 13, 1922 a thermometer registered a high temperature of 136 in El Azizia, Libya and ever since that location held the title as the world's hottest temperature.

Well that was until earlier this week. The World Meteorological Organization overturned the title after an in depth investigation took place by a team of Meteorologists. After the research, they concluded that the thermometer that registered the record was incorrect. Now that the data has been thrown out, Death Valley, CA can reclaim the title as the hottest place on earth. Not only do they have a world record to back it up, the average high during the peak of summer is 116 degrees Fahrenheit. Death Valley sits in a desert in southern California that only receives about 2" of rain a year. The dry location is also located 282 below sea level. Both of these factors contribute to the intense heat.

If a tornado threatens, get into the basement. If you don't have a basement, a small, interior room in the lowest floor of your home is relatively safe. Avoid rooms with windows. Mobile homes are not safe in a tornado.
