Murder victim's mom upset over memorial

Posted: Updated:

Leandra Frankum was only 21-years-old when she was killed in July and her family didn't wait long to place a homemade memorial in front of the house where she was killed. Now Leandra's mother is upset that the memorial has been removed.

"It's sorta shocking that someone's cold hearted like that."

Trina Frankum looked forward to lighting the candles at her daughter Leandra's memorial each night. The tradition brought her comfort in the midst of such tragedy.

"Everybody would go out and light the candles. And everybody would just be around the memorial for a little bit."

But that memorial is gone. In its place, only a few pictures and Leandra's name.

Trina Frankum says she got a call from neighbors that a former occupant of the house was taking items down. She says the former occupant came by Saturday evening with a police escort to get rid of the candles, stuffed animals and other items surrounding the lightpost in front of the house.

Frankum says the memorial wasn't hurting anyone and wasn't even on the homeowners property.

"The sad part is that they threw it in the dumpster. All the stuff animals, the candles the pictures, who knows where that's at.  That's the sad part."

We stopped by the homeowner's house to ask why they would get rid of memorial, but no one came to the door.

The home where the murder took place remains empty, but Trina says she will rebuild her daughter's memorial.

"I don think its right for her or anybody else to go and do something like that to go and take away the memorial is disrespectful. Who does that?  She could have called us and said 'Trina, you know it's time to take down that memorial, time to get this stuff.' But no, nothing. It's just been a big mess."

No one from the Perrysburg Township Police Department was available to comment. One of the family members of the homeowner who removed the memorial did not want to go on camera, but says her family just wants this to all go away.
