The new school year is just getting underway, and Toledo Public Schools are reporting a major drop in enrollment.
Toledo Public Schools enrollment is down several hundred students this year, a trend the district has been fighting for years.
Our media partner The Blade reports about 800 fewer students are enrolled this year compared to May of last school year, bringing total enrollment to about 22, 500 students.
Three years ago 25,00 students attended TPS, during the past decade enrollment has dropped by more than 10,000 students.
District leaders say the decline is linked to people moving out of Toledo, but it's unclear if state report cards rating or options for charter schools are also adding to the drop in enrollment.
Fewer students means less money from the state, TPS is asking voters for new money in November.
