Owens ranks 5th for defaulting on loans

TOLEDO, Ohio -

A northwest Ohio college is near the top of the list when it comes to the number of students who defaulted on federal loans.

Owens community college ranks in at fifth among nearly 18 hundred public institutions across the nation when it comes to defaults on student loans. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 557 students at Owens defaulted on their loans for the 2009 fiscal year.

"Owens is looked at by the dept. Of education by the default rate, which is actually 13.9, so we are managed to make sure that percentage is less than 25 percent. The 557 students obviously concerns us," says Dr. Betsy Johnson, Dean of Enrollment Services at Owens.

Dr. Johnson says 75 percent of the students who defaulted on their loans had their tuition and fees paid for by the Federal Pell Grant. Those dollars are also used to cover things living expenses, room and board and transportation.

"Truly those loans were to help them live while they were attending school. If they're also working, it takes them away from trying to study, so they're trying to reduce the burden of working too many hours to allow them to focus on their education," says Dr. Johnson.

Dr. Johnson says the high default numbers are a reflection of the economy. Many students found themselves unable to make payments or, in some cases, find work.

" So when they're out of school, they're looking for a job and they don't have those loans to help them pay for those things, so what are they going to do, they're going to pay for the rent and those things, and the student loan bill is the one that goes unpaid," says Dr. Johnson

About half of the 20 public schools with the most defaults were community or technical colleges.

Experts say it's best to consider all your options before deciding on taking out loans.
