Heating & furnace companies prep for chill

Posted: Updated:
LUCAS COUNTY -

The weather is changing, and local heating companies are busy making service calls as people prepare for the chill.

We spoke with James Tusing, a Service Mechanic at M&M Heating and Cooling.  "We're starting service maintenance for the season.  We'd like to get a jumpstart for it so we're prepared before the cold air gets here.  Then we'll be busy with emergencies."

Workers at M&M Heating and Cooling say they're seeing a rise in the number of service calls, this week.

"The forecast dictates a lot.  I think people start thinking more about their furnace when they know it is going to be cold."

Mary Gressler, who scheduled a service call for this morning, told us, "I also need the heat.  I want to be prepared."

Some of the overnight low temperatures late this week and into the weekend will be cooler than any that we've seen since the middle of May.

The service-call sales pitch is not just 'hot air'.  James says it is a matter of safety.

"I think it's very important.  Here's a machine that's shooting fire inside your house.  It sure is nice to know that it is doing it safely and correctly.  We want to make sure that the amount of carbon monoxide that the furnace is producing is at an acceptable level, and going out the chimney.  Very important.  We also want to make sure all of the safeties are working properly.  That's also very important.  If something goes left of center, we want that thing to shut down."

James added that there are also a couple of things you can do keep your furnace running smoothly.

"Keep the air filters clean.  Change the batteries in the thermostat."

Tonight will be about ten degrees cooler than average for mid-September.
