Two Walleye Players Return

Posted: Updated:

Forward Joey Martin and defenseman Joey Ryan have agreed to terms with the Toledo Walleye for the 2012-13 season.

Martin returns to Toledo where he enjoyed a memorable first professional season. Joey scored a team high 22 goals to go along with a team leading 27 assists with the Walleye a season ago. He also skated in eight games last year in the AHL with Houston, scoring twice.

"I thought Martin had the skill set to be a great player for us going into last season," said head coach Nick Vitucci. "Joey was fantastic throughout much of last season. He will be a key component for us to be successful this coming year."

The Thorold, Ontario native was the Sherwood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for January 9-15th when he scored four goals with three assists and was a plus seven. Prior to his professional career, Joey spent four seasons in the NCAA with Nebraska-Omaha. Martin collected 103 points (39g, 64a) in four years there.

Ryan was acquired by the Walleye part way through last season from Elmira. In 37 games with Toledo, Joey collected 63 penalty minutes and 15 points (3g, 12a). He appeared in 11 games with the Jackals before the trade.

"Ryan was a great addition for us last year," said head coach Nick Vitucci. "He has a great defensive mind and brings an added element of toughness to us."

Ryan was originally a second round draft choice of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. The Stoneham, Massachusetts native was a member of the Quebec Ramparts that won the Memorial Cup in 2005 prior to turning professional in 2008. Joey has skated in 197 total professional games over his career with 15 goals, 52 assists and 350 penalty minutes.

On October 13, the Toledo Walleye open its 2012-13 season against the division rival Kalamazoo Wings. Come early for the FinFest Opening Night pregame party at 4:30 p.m. in The Aquarium. Exhibition, Opening Night, and season tickets are on sale now online at www.toledowalleye.com, or by phone at (419) 725-9255.
