Teams from 4 states in town for Haz Mat training

Posted: Updated:

If you live or drive by the Lucas County Rec Center you may have seen what appeared to be a dangerous situation on Wednesday, but don't be alarmed, it's just a drill.

The training exercise involves emergency teams from a number of states. Everything about the training is realistic. The exercise simulates hazardous materials found inside Ned Skeldon stadium. Local first responders decide they need help and the Ohio National Guard's Civil Support Team is called in.

The team handles emergencies or terrorist events that involve unknown hazards from things like chemical, biological and high yield explosive threats. Deputy Chief Thomas Jaksetic of the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department says the training is valuable for the teams and the community, "It is their opportunity to simulate a real world incident involving hazardous materials that affect a large population. The exercise allows us to grade ourselves and to evaluate our efficiencies."

Members of the Ohio civil support team have gone through more than 25 thousand hours of highly specialized training and for this exercise they've been joined by teams from Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Lt. Col. Jeff Suver is the Commander of the Ohio National Guard's 52nd Civil Support Team, "If there is something real that happens we've already formed these relationships and we now have an understanding of how each team works. We also understand our capabilities and our limitations and how we can put our assets together for the good of the community and the good of the state."

Training continues Thursday at the Lucas County Rec Center.
