BG businesses fed up with gas leaks

Posted: Updated:

Marcus Baez works at Motor Runnin' Drive Thru in Bowling Green.  The carryout and car wash sits right along North Main Street, an area recently plagued by gas leaks.

"They've had a couple of gas leaks and it's really closed the road off so no one can drive through here," he said.

Since May, gas lines have been hit 4 times along the same stretch in the city.  Police say construction crews struck lines while working.  Sometimes, it affected service and most times it resulted in evacuations.

"Its an inconvenience to the customers, its an inconvenience to Columbia Gas," Chris Kozak, Spokesperson for Columbia Gas, said. "Regardless of the situation we want to make sure everyone follows proper procedures whenever they put a shovel in the ground."

Kozak doesn't know why this keeps happening, but says it's the company's job to figure it out and keep people safe.  He says even in construction zones, they don't expect leaks.

"We expect zero but as far as this situation it is a little heavier than normal," Kozak said.  "We continue to figure out what's happening down there to make sure they start to dig safe."

In the meantime, local businesses hope the construction ends soon so their bottom line can get back to normal.

No one was injured in any of the gas leak incidents.
